There is no general treatment concept for the afflicted temporomandibular joint and the CMD syndrome.

The goal of therapy is to contain pain and restore the functionality of the temporomandibular joint.

It is fundamentally crucial to clarify the cause: With the help of the manual functional and structural analysis as well as in the instrumental occlusion analysis, the findings are determined (see diagnostics) and from this the specific treatment concept is defined.

Occlusion disorders

If the discomfort at the temporomandibular joint is caused by occlusion disorders (this means that the bite is not correct), specially designed "bite splints" can help.

These support the teeth in a corrected joint position so that the jaws can rest on each other and move better again: The chewing muscles relax, the capsule of the temporomandibular joint is stretched and the jaw heads are in a better position and the pain in the temporomandibular joint decreases.

The splints are available for the upper and lower jaw, and the type, height and design of the splint are determined individually for each patient. And since the jaw positions change in the course of these treatments, it is indispensable to regularly check the splints and carefully adjust their position.

If the cause of the occlusion disorder is the incorrect tooth position, this incorrect tooth position should also be eliminated with the help of orthodontic treatment. Often, joint treatment concepts are planned with the dentist.

Accompanying treatment

Supplementary exercises must be performed to strengthen the mouth opener muscles and to coordinate the lower jaw movements.

This results in subsequent movements within the entire musculoskeletal system and a treatment of the upper cervical region is indispensable: A successful TMD syndrome treatment always needs an accompanying physiotherapeutic and / or osteopathic or logopedic treatment.

For bruxism

If the TMD syndrome is caused by nightly teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism), an accompanying acupuncture treatment and stress-reducing relaxation technique is necessary for support.

Start with a preliminary consultation

To ensure optimal and effective treatment, a consultative preliminary discussion and a comprehensive assessment of the patient's condition is a prerequisite.

A suitable and individually tailored course of treatment can only be determined for you after an exact diagnosis has been made and your individual wishes have been expressed. The necessary means of treatment and their costs will be arranged especially for you.
